About the event

The destruction caused by the Second World War gave archaeologists an opportunity to start exploring this previously little understood part of the Roman city.

As part of redevelopment programmes many sites were excavated in the area of the Guildhall, especially in the 1980s. But it was only in 1988 that the shape of one feature finally became apparent as the Roman Amphitheatre. This was preserved under the Guildhall Art Gallery where our visit begins.

From the Amphitheatre itself, Andrew takes us further into the changing history of this part of Londinium, finishing by the remains of the Roman Fort. And, as usual, we'll mull over all we've seen in a local pub afterwards.

Note that for the first 10 days or so of booking, the event will be open to CBA London members and students only. If tickets remain after this, we'll make them available to the public.
