About the event

Join us for a Brother's tour of the Charterhouse on Saturday 28th June at 1.45pm. Each Brother has a different perspective and therefore each tour is a different, unique experience. They will provide an individual look at the history of the site and the lifestyle of the Brothers through the centuries.


The history of the Charterhouse dates to the bubonic plague pandemic of 1348, when land which is now Charterhouse Square was leased by Sir Walter Manny to be used as an emergency cemetery to bury victims of the disease. The mass burial site and subsequent Chapel built nearby to pray for their souls was funded by Sir Walter. After the plague a Carthusian monastery was founded at the Charterhouse in 1371. The monastery thrived until the Dissolution, when is subsequently passed through the ownership of several wealthy noblemen. In 1611, Thomas Sutton bought the Charterhouse with the hope of…
